The 2022 “Best Boat” Nominee – X5 PLUS debuting at the Annapolis Boat Show

Hull #017 is the first of the X5 PLUS series and will be on display at the
upcoming boat show in Annapolis

Following up on its SAIL magazine “Best Boats” winning X5, South Africa-based Xquisite Yachts has been busy of late working on no less than three new projects. The first of these, the X5 PLUS, represents an evolution of the already outstanding X5.

Chief among the changes relative to its predecessor are lighter displacement and a more powerful rig in the interest of speed. Other upgrades (based on feedback from existing customers) include everything from a state-of-the-art electrical system to more handholds – all with an eye toward ensuring the best sailing experience possible.

Amenities include a dedicated tool cabinet, a forward-facing nav area that also serves as an excellent watch-standing station on passage, a raised outside helm station to port, a large galley, and a wealth of saloon and helm windows.

Xquisite Africa acquires southern Hemisphere’s largest five-axis CNC milling machine – a game-changer

A starburst of European technology will arrive in SA later this year in the form of Africa’s first large five axis CNC machine, due to be installed at a brand new facility outside Cape Town in July.

Say goodbye to plugs and moulds; say hello to a 20m x 5m x 3m monster machine that has a volume of 300 000 litres – equal to ten midsized swimming pools. The technology has been available in Europe for about two years but has yet to be installed south of the Sahara.

Clinton Johns, spokesperson for Xquisite Africa (a joint venture between Xquisite Yachts International and Johns), told SABBEX the machine would have immediate application to his company Phoenix Marine Manufacturing which is due to start tooling up with a 60′ performance sail catamaran and thereafter a 60′ luxury power cat. Phoenix Marine already produces the successful Xquisite luxury X5 50′ catamaran at its Atlantis facility.

“It’s a complete and absolute game-changer”

– Johns said.

Need a Yacht? Just Push a Button... “The machine has already started being fabricated in Italy. Imagine designing a full 42 catamaran consisting of 90 moulds including the deck and hull and all the internal components in a CAD program and being able to mill them to less than 1mm accuracy in 1/3 the time.

“This changes the industry’s whole way of tooling and the number of man-hours it takes to build a boat mould and plug.”

Smaller CNC machines are widely in use but the new Mega 5 axis variety is a huge step forward in both scale and innovation. Johns said the new five axis would dramatically reduce boatbuilding production time from currently about 24 months to about 8 months in exceptional cases.

Johns said: “You don’t have to have wooden stations, you don’t need plugs – the machine does everything.”

The machine, dubbed Shawu (largest Elephant in recent history with largest tusks), will be able to do both milling and 3D printing. The 3D head installed on the machine allows it to make some of the largest 3D printed objects in the world. The 3D head can ‘print’ thermoset resins, foam, plastics, cement, and even recycled plastics.

Said Johns: “This option gives a totally different dynamic to the current thinking of manufacturing any large components.”

Need a Yacht? Just Push a Button...

The new CNC facility on a 42000 m² erf will be based within the fringes of Cape Town and only 20km from the city centre. It will be a full custom factory to allow other boatyards or industries to take advantage of both the 5 axix milling or the mould-making facility adjacent to it. Some ‘hot desking’ and ‘pay as you go conference facilities’ for CAD/CAM designers will be available on the facility for jobs requiring intense 24/7 work.

Johns expects the machine to have immediate application far beyond boatbuilding, such as in the renewable energy sector where South Africa is already manufacturing wind turbine components. Target markets include yacht building, filmmaking, aerospace, road transport, automotive (electric vehicles), wind turbines, and sculpture.

“In fact anything you can imagine in Solidworks/Rhino/Blender or any other 3D program/Gaming Engine – this machine will be able to mill or 3D print” – Johns said.

Johns, with 35 years of plastic industry experience as owner of Duroplastic, said the cost of milling could be significantly reduced as many of the finishing and tooling materials such as the tooling board, tooling paste – Easyshape, hi-build Sprayshape putties and Gloskote that are traditionally imported had been in the Duroplastic stable for decades.

He said access to the technology would help local manufacturers compete in the global marketplace.

Multihulls World praises the innovative X5 Plus of Xquisite Yachts

X5 PLUS A CRUISING MACHINE

Derived directly from the X5, the Plus retains an unconventional silhouette that may dissuade some from going beyond appearances… but that would be a shame: those frightened off would be missing out on a beautiful cruising machine with intelligent specifications. This new model benefits from the experience gained during 6 years of the X5: the bows have been modified, the displacement is lighter by two tons, the sail plan has increased in area and the equipment is even more complete.

The X5 Plus is perfectly suited to the cruising families that have chosen it. Rigorous design by a team of experienced sailors (the seas off South Africa are an excellent learning environment), meticulous construction, exemplary deck plan, abundant and perfectly functional equipment, remarkable overall quality of execution, tempered glass skylights: these are the strong points of this catamaran that deserves to be recognized.

Xquisite Yachts proudly announces the new X5 PLUS

Based on the amazing success of the Xquisite X5, the joint venture between Xquisite Yachts and Cape Town based Phoenix Marine announces the arrival of their new model, the X5 PLUS

‘We’ve have been working on the X5 PLUS design for quite some time, and the first two hulls are already in production. When we started to work on this project our main goal was to improve the sailing performance as well as to incorporate every design feature and new idea based on the feedback from all our existing X5 owners.’

The use of modern materials and build techniques, such as vacuum infusion and composite bulkheads allowed for a significantly lighter build of the X5 PLUS. The 16 tons light displacement, and the much more powerful sail plan guarantees fast and comfortable passages.

The new bow design offers modern looks, while the overall length of the new model is 53’ with the additional bow sprit which is part of the very powerful sail plan of the new X5 PLUS. All the lines are led to the protected helm station and all three headsails are installed on electric furlers, allowing to sail the boat completely single handed in any wind angle or sail plan.

X5 Plus Technical Specs

Many other improvements are based on the experience building the X5 over the past 6 years, as well as on the feedback received from all the Xquisite owners after they sailed their X5 thousands of miles:

Besides the great sailing performance, probably the other most important improvement is regarding the electrical system. The new generation 22kWh Li-ion batteries and new high-tech solar panels from Germany are standard now with a total of 2,3 KW high efficiency solar array, which work much better in low light conditions as well. The new panels are built with tempered ‘walk-on glass’ making easy to work on the coach roof, and the new 24V electrical system includes high output alternators, battery chargers and 6kW inverter. This very powerful electrical system allows for fully electric cooking with induction cooktops and electric oven in the galley, and a new electric grill setup incorporated into the wet bar in the cockpit.

The new air conditioners using inverter technology are more silent and more efficient and could be run overnight without the generator, while the large opening portholes on the front salon windows, as well as the much larger forward facing deck hatches above the beds in each cabin offer great natural ventilation throughout the entire vessel.

There are more handholds throughout the boat, and the new electric TV lift in the salon is pivoting for better viewing angles. Waterproof wireless phone charging at the helm and nav station eliminates the need of charging cables. The overhead rain shower in the cockpit is complimented by a pull-out shower, and the shore water connection on the transom helps to avoid contamination of the water tanks with marina water while at the dock.

New and much improved multizone Fusion Apollo sound system with more speakers and subwoofer offers great sound quality. The cabinetry got new hardware with soft closing drawers and hinges as well as new latches, while the headroom in the salon was increased by 4 inches. Several different color choices are available both for the interior and exterior.

The build time of a new X5 PLUS is almost a full year at 40,000 working hours, so the company only builds four boats each year customizing each yacht to suit the owner’s preference.

Based on the success of the previous Xquisite X5, the first nine hulls of this new model are already sold, which means the next available hull would be delivered in 2023.
